Acupuncture is the insertion of ultra-thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points which reside on ‘channels’ or ‘meridians’; these are pathways in both the exterior and interior of the body. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions.
What to expect during your visit.
Each patient undergoes a thorough evaluation by Dr. Karen Zuidema, a board certified and licensed acupuncturist in the state of NJ and Doctor of Nutrition.
A typical first session will include a medical history, including discussion of your current symptoms or complaints. The evaluation will be based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, TCM, in which the person is viewed as a whole, so that all aspects of a person’s life will be considered. TCM focuses on the presenting symptoms and disease, but also concentrates on the root cause of illness.
Dr. Zuidema will examine the tongue and palpates the pulse as part of the assessment and makes a differential diagnosis based on the history, clinical observation, and exam.
After the evaluation, she will create a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. Contraindications, if any, will also be discussed.
